How Frank Found His Freedom, One Bus Trip at a Time

When Frank first came to us, getting around meant relying on other people.

Lifts from family. Waiting on someone else's schedule. Not being able to just go where he wanted, when he wanted. For a lot of us that freedom is easy to take for granted. For Frank, it was the thing he wanted most. He wanted to get places on his own.

So that became the goal. Learning to travel independently. And for Frank, public transport was the perfect place to start.

Why public transport matters

Here's something a lot of people don't realise. Getting confident on public transport is one of the biggest independence wins there is. It's the difference between waiting on a lift and just going. Catching up with mates, getting to work, heading into town, all on your own terms.

For so many of our participants, this is the skill that opens everything else up. You don't need a car to be independent. You just need to know you can get yourself where you need to go.

Frank and the rules

Now here's the thing about Frank. He loves a rule. Properly loves them. He likes knowing how things work, doing them the right way, following the steps. And it turns out that's a bit of a superpower when it comes to public transport.

Timetables. Routes. Knowing which platform, which stop, what to do if a service changes. Frank took to all of it. The structure suited him perfectly. We worked through it together, trip by trip, until he could plan a journey and carry it out start to finish on his own. Reading the timetable. Catching the right bus. Knowing exactly what to do at every step.

Watching it click was something special. The same thing that made him love the rules made him brilliant at this.

One thing leads to another

That confidence didn't just stop at public transport. It spilled over.

Frank set his sights on something bigger. His licence. And that same love of doing things properly came right back into play, because learning to drive is all about road rules and road safety. The comprehension side, actually taking in and remembering all that information, is tough for a lot of people. But Frank had already shown he could do it. We worked through the road rules together, the same way we'd worked through the timetables. Steady, no rushing, at his pace.

And he did it. Frank passed his Ps.

From relying on lifts to catching public transport solo to sitting behind the wheel of his own car. That's a huge journey, and every bit of it was Frank's own work.

That's what 1:1 is for

This is what 1:1 support is all about. It's not us doing it for you. It's us in your corner while you do it yourself, at your pace, working towards the goals that actually matter to you.

For Frank, it started with a bus trip. For someone else it might be something completely different. That's the beauty of 1:1. It's built entirely around you.

If you or someone you love has a goal that feels out of reach, we'd love to help you chip away at it. Give us a call on 1800 319 581 or email hello@tdacvic.com.
