How our Warragul NDIS life skills program made its own podcast

It started with an idea. What if the crew made their own podcast?

Not listened to one. Made one. Their own topics, their own voices, their own episode. And that is exactly what the crew set out to do for media week at our NDIS life skills program in Warragul.Untitled design 19

It began with the planning

A podcast does not just happen. It starts with sitting down together and working out what you actually want to say.

That is where the crew began, a while back. Throwing topics around. Talking through what they wanted to chat about. Working out what made a good idea and what needed a bit more thought. That planning is a real skill in itself. Communication, teamwork, making decisions as a group, and the patience to build something over time rather than all at once.

By the time media week rolled around, all those ideas were ready to become a real episode.

Recording day

The big day kicked off with a bit of movement. A fitness session to get everyone up, moving and in a good headspace before the real work started. Nothing loosens the nerves like a laugh and a bit of energy first.

Then it was over to the House to get recording. Mics on. Record rolling. Months of ideas turning into an actual podcast, in real time.

And you could see the pride as it came together. This was not something being done for them. This was something they were making, with their own voices, on their own topics. A heap of teamwork went into it, and it showed.

Wrapping up at Coffee Vibes

When the recording was done, the crew wrapped up the only way you should after a big effort. Drinks in hand at Coffee Vibes, having a yarn about how it all went.

That bit matters too. Celebrating what you made, together, and soaking in the fact that you actually did it. A good day out earned, off the back of a week of real work.

Why a podcast is a life skills goldmine

Here is the thing about a project like this. It does not look like a typical NDIS life skills session. It looks like fun, and it is. But underneath, the crew were building real disability life skills the whole way through.

Planning and making decisions as a group. Communicating clearly. Speaking up and being heard. Working as a team towards something bigger than any one person. Building confidence by having a go at something brand new. And seeing a project through from a first idea all the way to a finished thing you can be proud of.

These are the kind of life skills for adults with disabilities that actually stick, because you cannot teach them from a worksheet. You learn them by making a podcast with your mates.

Come and be part of it

This is what our NDIS life skills program in Warragul is really about. Real projects, real skills, real mates, and a whole lot of fun along the way. It is one of our NDIS community programs across Warragul and the wider Gippsland region, South East Melbourne and there is always room for a new face.
